ERIE, Pa. --
Malcolm Walters and
Durrell McDonald scored 17 points apiece as the Mercyhurst men's basketball team claimed an 86-72 victory over Clarion during Saturday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Walters also had eight rebounds and seven assists while
Dajuan Dent and
Lorenzo Collier chipped in with 16 and 10 points, respectively, for the Lakers (9-11, 7-9).
H'ian Hale added eight rebounds and eight assists.
With the game knotted at 55-55, Mercyhurst went on a 16-4 run -- led by eight points by Dent -- to take a 71-59 lead. From there, the Lakers held the margin at a comfortable distance and held on for the win.
Mercyhurst had led by 11 in the first half before the visiting Golden Eagles clawed their way back with a 16-7 stretch to start the second half. Then, Walters hit a three-pointer to break the 55-all knot, which McDonald followed with a trey of his own. Dent accumulated his eight points through three field goals and two "and-one" free throws.
The Lakers finished 33 of 66 from the field (50.0 percent), including an impressive 13-for-21 from three-point land (61.9). McDonald had four 3s while Hale and Walters made three each.
Clarion was 27 of 59 from the field (45.8) and 6 of 20 from beyond the arc (30.0). The Golden Eagles were led by Jamani Pierce, who had 16 points and eight rebounds.
Mercyhurst outrebounded Clarion, 41-31.
The Lakers will return to action on Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. PSAC contest at Slippery Rock.
