HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. – Mercyhurst infielders
Chris Gonzalez and
Matthew Schneider both had three runs batted in and the Merychurst baseball team benefitted from a five-run first inning and four-run second inning in a 14-2 thrashing of Post University on Sunday.
The Lakers' (5-1) win completed a three-game sweep of the Eagles (1-6).
Drew Delsignore,
Daniel Elliott, and Schneider each drove in runs in the first two innings to help put the Lakers out in front early.
Schneider finished with three hits in four at-bats, while Elliott added two RBI and two runs to go with three hits. Elliott leads the Lakers with nine RBI through the early season. Delsignore upped his season RBI-total to seven after gaining two in the game.
Chris Gonzalez provided a two-run home run in the third inning, his first of the season. He also scored
Dan Popio on an RBI-double in the fifth.
Jimmy Latona continued his strong weekend after collecting three hits in three at-bats and scoring three runs.
The offensive outburst provided more than enough insurance for starting pitcher
Chris Vallimont. The sophomore right-hander went five innings and gave up just five hits and two earned runs. He also struck out six.
Nolan Freeman,
Jim Solano, and
Connor Ryan combined to throw four scoreless innings out of the bullpen with seven strikeouts.
The Lakers take to the road once again for three games out-of-state next weekend. They'll travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on Ohio Dominican in a single nine-inning affair March 3 followed by a doubleheader against Urbana March 4.
