Men's Hoops Outlasts Cal (Pa.) For Double-Overtime Victory

ERIE, Pa. -- Lorenzo Collier scored 27 points while Dajuan Dent and Durrell McDonald recorded double-doubles as the Mercyhurst men's basketball team claimed an 87-82 double-overtime win against California (Pa.) during Wednesday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.

McDonald totaled 24 points and 10 rebounds while Dent came through with 15 points and 10 rebounds. H'ian Hale added seven rebounds and five assists for the Lakers (13-12, 11-10).

For California (10-17, 7-14), Robel Techle led the way with 26 points and eight rebounds. Luka Andjusic, Cordell Smith and Tony Richardson added 18, 15 and 12 points, respectively. Richardson and Jay Tucker grabbed eight rebounds each.

Collier led the Lakers with seven points during the second overtime period. He hit a jumper and made a free throw that follow to give Mercyhurst a 77-74 advantage. The Lakers led the rest of the way. Collier added a 4-for-4 run at the line in the final minute.

After falling behind 9-0, Mercyhurst trailed until it pulled into a tie at 56-56 with 5:34  left in the contest. After another tie at 59-all, the Lakers took its first lead of the contest when McDonald hit a three-pointer to put MU ahead, 62-61, with 23 seconds left. Richardson made 1 of 2 free throws with 4.6 seconds on the clock, tying the game at 62-62, and a final attempt by Collier missed its mark for Merychurst.

California took command early in the first extra period. The Vulcans enjoyed an 11-2 stretch to take a 73-64 lead before the Lakers stormed back with a 10-1 run of their own. Dent and Collier had five points apiece during that stretch, culminating with Collier's game-tying three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining. Cal was unable to get a shot off, setting the stage for Mercyhurst to win the game in the second OT.

Mercyhurst finished with a 49-41 edge in rebounds while its bench outscored Cal's bench, 58-6.

The Lakers will return to action on Saturday when they visit cross-town rival Gannon for a 3 p.m. PSAC contest.
