California (Pa.) narrowly defeated Mercyhurst 68-66, in their last matchup on Jan. 21. Mercyhurst (20-6, 15-5) is currently tied for third in the PSAC West Division with Edinboro (19-7, 15-5). Cal (25-1, 19-1) leads the division while Indiana, Pa. (19-5, 17-3) is econd.
During the previous matchup between Mercyhurst and California, Heintz led the Lakers scoring 21 points, pulling down seven rebounds and dishing out six assists.Piaggesi added 18 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Bell recorded 11 points and hauled down a team-high eight rebounds.
California was led by Miki Glenn, who had 21 points, Seairra Barrett added 15 and Abbey Sporio contributed 12. Barrett made a go-ahead layup in the final five seconds to send Cal to victory.
Piaggesi leads Mercyhurst in several categories including points per game (16.0), rebounds (7.0), field-goal percentage (.573), blocks (2.0) and free-throw percentage (.813). She rates second in the PSAC in field-goal percentage, second in blocks, sixth in scoring and eighth in free-throw percentage.
Heintz leads Mercyhurst in assists (6.3) and steals (1.7). She averages 15.2 points and 6.8 rebounds. She ranks second in the PSAC in assists, eighth in scoring and 10th in field-goal percentage (.413).
Glenn and Barrett ranked 2-3 in scoring within the PSAC while, in order, Glenn, Sporio and Barrett rank 1-2-3 in steals. Glenn averages 18.7 points and conference-leading numbers of 6.5 assists and 4.0 steals. Barrett is third in points (17.8), field-goal percentage (.565) and steals (2.6). Sporio averages 2.8 steals.
