Heintz Joins 1,000-Point Club During 56-54 Victory Over Edinboro

ERIE, Pa. -- Angela Heintz surpassed the 1,000-point plateau as a Laker during the Mercyhurst women's basketball team's 56-54 victory over Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. Heintz is the 20th player in program history to score 1,000 points.

Heintz had a double-double, leading the Lakers with 14 points and 11 rebounds. That puts her at 1,002 in a Mercyhurst jersey -- and 1,049 as a collegian (she played for Duquesne her freshman year).

Natalie Piaggesi contributed 11 points and nine rebounds for the Lakers. She also recorded three blocks.

Katie Fischer led Edinboro (19-7, 15-5) with 15 points. Ciara Rosten added 13 points, Michelle Jahn posted 11 points and Jontay Walton contributed 10 for the Fighting Scots.

Heintz reached the 1,000-mark in the second quarter as she scored eight points during a 10-2 Mercyhurst stretch. Heintz finished the run with a trey to give the Lakers a 27-20 lead, while also hitting exactly 1,000.

The Lakers took a 34-30 lead into halftime before visiting Edinboro clawed back to tie the game in the third, but the Scots never found their way into the lead as MU grabbed a 42-39 advantage through three periods.

Edinboro finally got over the hump in the fourth, taking its first lead of the second half, 43-42, on a basket by Rosten. Emily Norris then helped the Lakers regain the lead, scoring a pair of baskets to start an 8-2 streak by the host Lakers.

The Fighting Scots responded with a similar charge, going on a 9-2 run, to take a 54-52 lead with under one minute to go. They did not score the rest of the way, while Mercyhurst went 4 of 6 from the free-throw line and held its visitors scoreless on the Edinboro's final three possessions.

Jalin Steel pulled Mercyhurst even with a pair of free throws before Norris gave the Lakers the lead, making 1 of 2 from the stripe. Piaggesi hit 1 of 2 with five seconds to go before EUP's Michelle Jahn missed a running three-point attempt at the buzzer.

The Lakers will return to play on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. against PSAC opponent California (Pa.) in the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. They will also celebrate Senior Night.
