Fourth-Quarter Sends Women's Hoops To Road Victory at UPJ

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's basketball team made a fourth-quarter comeback to earn a 74-66 victory over Pittsburgh-Johnstown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon.

Angela Heintz – one of four Lakers to score in double-figures — finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Jalin Steel added 17 points and six rebounds while Alex Artise and Jessica Bell put in 10 points apiece.

Jamie Tabon led the Mountain Cat offense, outscoring all other players with 19 points. She also had eight rebounds. Laurel O'Barto added 15 points and Gabrielle Smith contributed 14 points.

Mercyhurst (19-5, 14-4) went on a hot streak early, going up 7-0 in the first two minutes of the game. Pitt-Johnstown was able to cut the Laker lead to 17-14 at the end of the period. The Lakers held a slight lead over Pitt-Johnstown for all but the last six seconds of the first half when Victoria Moreland hit a layup that tied the game at 27-27.

UPJ (7-18, 3-16) led for most of the third quarter -- twice building a seven-point lead. The Lakers had a 10-point run across the third and fourth quarters, turning a 54-47 deficit into a 57-54 lead. From that point on, the Mountain Cats never led again.

Heintz broke a 59-all tie, making a pair of free throws at the beginning of a six-point Mercyhurst run. The Lakers stayed ahead the rest of the game, making 9 of 10 free throws during the final three minutes.

The Lakers outrebounded UPJ, 36-26, and came up with 16 steals.

The Lakers will start a three-game stretch at home on Wednesday when Seton Hill visits the Mercyhurst Athletic Center for a 5:30 p.m. start.
