SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team was shut out for the second time this season in a 3-0 defeat to Syracuse at Tennity Ice Pavilion Friday evening.
Mercyhurst struggled to register shots on goal against the stout Syracuse defense throughout the game. When they did get a shot on net, Syracuse goaltender Abby Miller stopped every one, leading to a 14-save shutout. The Orange out shot the Lakers 24-14 in the game.
Syracuse found its success offensively on the power play, scoring twice on four opportunities with the extra skater. Savannah Rennie scored the first of the power play goals in the final minute of the first period. The goal was her fourth of the season.
After a scoreless second period, the Orange added to its lead 1:25 into the third period with an even-strength goal by Alysha Burriss to make it 2-0. Burriss netted her second of the evening and eighth of the season on the power play with 52 seconds remaining to end the game 3-0.
The Lakers failed to score on their five power play tries.
Sarah McDonnell got the start in goal for the Lakers and stopped 21 of 24 shots.
Rachael Smith led the Lakers with four shot attempts.
Mercyhurst (10-17-2, 6-8-1) looks to score revenge tomorrow, Feb. 11, when they face off against Syracuse at 3 p.m.
