Men's Hoops Knocks Off Millersville For Third Straight Win

ERIE, Pa. -- Lorenzo Collier scored 21 points and Patrick Smith totaled a double-double worth 14 points and 11 rebounds as the Mercyhurst men's basketball team defeated Millersville, 69-55, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup on Sunday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The Lakers have opened their season with three straight wins.

Stephen Spurlock Jr. added 13 points and six rebounds while Dontae Williams grabbed seven boards and Ryan Roland dished four assists for Mercyhurst (3-0, 2-0).

Millersville was led by Jordan Greene, who scored 12 points. James Sullivan and Marcus Adkison put in 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Lakers took a 33-19 lead into halftime after holding the visiting Marauders (1-4, 0-2) to a 6-for-31 performance from the field in the first half (19.3 percent). During that same time frame, the Lakers were 11 of 21 (52.4).

Mercyhurst grabbed the lead with an early 7-0 run, but a 12-point streak later in the first half helped the hosts widen the gap to 16 points. During the 12-0 stretch, Collier had seven points while the Mercyhurst defense held Millersville without a field goal for 7:37; the Marauders went 0-for-10 during that run.

In the second half, Mercyhurst twice widened its lead to 22 points, holding a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.

The Lakers held a 41-28 rebound edge and totaled 17 assists. From the field, Mercyhurst was 25 of 45 (55.6), including 6 of 15 from three-point territory (40.0). The Maraduers were 18 of 59 (30.5) and 4 of 21 (19.0), respectively.

Mercyhurst will return to action on Wednesday when it visits non-conference opponent Lake Erie for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
