ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's basketball team defeated Cheyney, 87-53, on Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The Lakers claimed their first win of the season with this initial conference victory.
Amber Renz led the Lakers with 19 points and did not miss an attempt from the field, going 8-for-8 from the field, including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, and 1-for-1 from the free-throw line.
Maria Lapertosa contributed 13 points and
Stephanie Petery added 11.
Emilee Norris was a force inside, totaling eight rebounds and three blocks., Norris also led blocks of the Lakers with three. Lapertosa and
Emily Shopene contributed five assists apiece.
Cheyney (0-3, 0-1 PSAC) was led by Marlon Herring, who had 13 points, and TaKayla Ellis, who had 12.
Mercyhurst earned the lead early by grabbing the initial basket and would never trail throughout the contest. The Lakers led by as much as 34.
Mercyhurst went on a 16-point run during the first quarter, leading 20-2 before Cheyney would score again. The Lakers cruised from there.
Mercyhurst (1-2, 1-0 PSAC) held an edge at the glass, claiming a 46-30 rebound advantage.
The Lakers outperformed the Wolves in shooting from the field and three point line. Mercyhurst made 35 of 64 from the field (54.7 percent) and converted 8 of 20 attempts from beyond the arc (40 percent). Cheyney went 22 of 65 attempts from the field (33.8 percent) and 2 of 11 from three-point land (18.2).
Mercyhurst will compete again on Sunday against Millersville in conference action at 1 p.m. in the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
