ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst volleyball team completed their regular season on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action. The Lakers claimed sets one (25-22), set three (25-21), and set four (25-14). Leaving Slippery Rock to claim the second set (31-29).
Mercyhurst was led by
Shelby Chesko who notched a game high of 20 kills she also added a block assist.
Katie Baird posted 12 kills, an ace and 13 digs.
Larissa Cass and
Alyssa Kling contributed 11 and 10 kills respectively. Kling led both aces with three and blocks with three, of which one was a solo block.
Abby Rose posted a game high of 30 assists for the game while
Makayla Mollé contributed 25.
Hannah Vuylsteke added 24 digs and an ace. Rose and Baird both contributed 13 digs apiece for the Lakers.
Slippery Rock was led by Shayla Ray who posted 10 kills, Kaley Fucci added eight while Lamija Alisic and Brooke Bostwick each contributed six.
Mercyhurst claimed set one 25-22, with no team holding more than a two point advantage over the other, until the Lakers snagged a 14-11 lead. Mercyhurst would hold this lead throughout the remainder of the set stretching their lead as high as 25-22. The closest the action would come to Slippery Rocks favor was when they trailed 20-19.
Slippery Rock claimed the second set 31-29. Mercyhust would lead by as much as three on three separate occasions, however they were unable to hold off a comeback drive from Slippery Rock. The Rock knotted the score at 20-20, the lead would change six times until the end of the set. Mercyhurst would tie the action 29-29 but would surrender the final two points of the set to Slippery Rock.
The Lakers claimed set three 25-21 coming back from an early 0-2 deficit the Lakers knotted the action at 3-3. Mercyhurst would then score three of the next four points to lead 7-4 a lead they would keep the remainder of the game. The Lakers would stretch their lead to as high as 21-14. Slippery Rock would make a push to come back as close as 24-21 would be unable to hold the Lakers from claiming the final point and the set.
Mercyhurst claimed the final set 25-14, scoring was tight as no team held more than a two point advantage over the other until Mercyhurst grabbed a 9-6 lead. The Lakers would hold this lead for the remainder of the set. Slippery Rock would bring the action to as close as 11-10. From this point on Mercyhurst scored 14 of the next 17 points scored to claim the set and the game.
