Owens, Novak Fuel Football's Season-Ending Win Over Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Running back Garrett Owens rushed for 204 yards while wide receiver Brad Novak hit the 100-yard mark for receiving as the Mercyhurst football team closed its season with a 23-10 victory over Lock Haven in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference interdivisional matchup.

Owens carried the ball 27 times in becoming the second Laker runner to hit the 200-yard mark this season. He also had a touchdown.

Novak had four receptions on his way to 100 yards. He scored a touchdown as well. Quarterback Doug Altavilla was 11 of 19 for 163 yards and two touchdowns.

For the MU defense, linebacker Joseph Scro finished with 11 tackles and one interception. Defensive back Jake Tarasovitch added eight tackles and defensive lineman Jehrod Gregory recorded a sack.

For Lock Haven, quarterback Kyle Knight had 21 carries for 130 yards and threw one touchdown pass. On defense, Alex Welch made nine tackles and Carlos Balkcom recorded two interceptions.

Mercyhurst got on the board first on Saturday, courtesy of a 28-yard field goal by Mark Shafer in the first quarter.

After the Bald Eagles (2-9) took the lead on a 5-yard touchdown pass by Knight to receiver John Ford, the Lakers jumped ahead again --  this time on a 83-yard run by Owens near the end of the first period.

Mercyhurst (5-6) added another touchdown before the end of the first half as Altavilla connected with fullback Theophilus Blackston III on a six-yard TD pass. That helped the Lakers to a 17-7 halftime lead.

The Lakers pushed their advantage to 23-7 in the third quarter on a 22-yard hookup from Altavilla to Novak. A third-quarter LHU field goal completed the scoring.
