Lakers Stumble In Home Opener

ERIE, Pa. – Two first-period goals scored 31 seconds apart put the Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team behind in an eventual 4-1 defeat to sixth-ranked St. Lawrence at Mercyhurst Ice Center Friday evening.

The Lakers (0-3) salvaged a late goal by Brooke Hartwick to prevent the shut out. Her first goal of the season was assisted by Alexa Vasko and Samantha Fieseler.

After most of the first period featured back-and-forth action, the Saints (1-0) scored back-to-back goals at 16:03 and 16:34 to take a commanding lead entering the second.

Kennedy Blair started the game in goal for the Lakers but was replaced at the start of the second period by Sarah McDonnell after allowing two goals on six shots. McDonnell made 15 stops on 17 shots for the remainder of the game.

St. Lawrence added two more goals in the second, including one on the power play, to take a 4-0 lead before Hartwick's third-period score.

Mercyhurst killed six-of-seven Saints' power plays, but went 0-for-3 on its own man-advantages.

The Lakers go for their first win tomorrow, Oct. 7, against St. Lawrence once again at Mercyhurst Ice Center beginning at 2 p.m.
