EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Mercyhurst men's soccer team lost 3-0 on the road to East Stroudsburg in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) quarterfinals Tuesday afternoon, abruptly ending the Lakers 2016 title defense.
The Lakers (12-6) lost their second-straight game to the Warriors (13-3-1), who move on to play top-seeded West Chester in the semifinals.
Mercyhurst managed to outshoot East Stroudsburg 5-4 in the first half but the Warriors went into the half with a 1-0 lead on a Keelby Espinola header in the 41
st minute.
The Warriors doubled their led 30 seconds into the second half on an Eddy Enowbi score and then proceed to go up 3-0 after Marcus Torgersson netted a goal in the 56
th minute.
Christopher Makengo led the Lakers with three shot attempts, but he and his teammates struggled to generate multiple threatening chances offensively.
The Lakers totaled five yellow cards while East Stroudsburg did not have any.
Mercyhurst now awaits the decision of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to determine whether or not the Lakers qualify for the national tournament. As of the the NCAA's latest regional rankings (Oct. 25), the Lakers are ranked fourth in the Atlantic Region with the top six teams qualifying for the national tournament.
