Football Unable To Spoil Edinboro's Homecoming

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Mercyhurst football team dropped a 28-25 decision to Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action on Saturday.

Running back Grayson Taylor led the Laker offense with 20 carries for 94 yards and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Doug Altavilla threw for 172 yards, completing 25 of 37 passes. He threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Brad Novak, who had six catches for 62 yards.

Defensively, Mercyhurst was led by linebackers Corbin Kessler and Alex Zacharyasz, who had eight tackles apiece, and linebacker Joseph Scro, who made two sacks.

Defensive backs Dante' Redwood and Tarique Ellis recorded interceptions.

Taylor scored both of his touchdowns in the first half, getting in from three yards out and, then, two yards. The second score held Mercyhurst to a 17-14 halftime lead.

A 63-yard interception return by Redwood set up Taylor's second touchdown.

Ellis' INT preserved the Lakers' three-point halftime lead.

EU came back with 14 points in the third quarter on a pair of TD runs by running back Walter Fletcher, who had scores of 10 and 1 yard.

The Lakers (3-4, 2-2) closed their deficit to three points with 2:32 remaining in the fourth quarter when Altavilla found Novak with a three-yard pass. After that, wide receiver Zach Smith threw to Altavilla for a two-point conversion, serving as the game's final points.

An onside kick followed; Edinboro recovered. After gaining one first down, the host Fighting Scots (4-3, 2-2) ran out the clock.

The Lakers will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 21, with a 12 p.m. home contest against Seton Hill.
