Box Score ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst volleyball team fell 3-2 to cross town rival Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on Tuesday night. The Lakers claimed set one 25-13 and set three 25-15. Leaving the Golden Knights to capture sets two 25-21, set four 25-10 and set five 15-8. Mercyhurst slides to a 6-12 overall record while falling to a 1-6 PSAC record.
Mercyhurst was led by
Alyssa Zirnheld who posted 12 kills, and two block assists.
Shelby Chesko was a close second with 11 kills, and two block assists.
Katie Baird rounded out the top three offensive players with nine kills and two block assists.
Makayla Mollé was the lead setter with 23 assists,
Abby Rose contributed 18.
Hannah Vuylsteke led the team in digs with 22, while
Alyssa Kling led in blocks with six.
Gannon was led by Rebekah Smith who posted 11 kills and Toni Leitshuh who posted 10.
Mercyhurst would take advantage of a 16-11 lead in which they would use to play from the front and take the set. Gannon would not take a lead in this set, they knotted the score five times but were unable to take the lead.
The Lakers would not lead in the second set, the closest they would come to snatching the lead was when Abbey Rose brought the scoring deficit down to a three point margin on a three point serving streak when Mercyhurst would trail 9-6.
Mercyhurst was able to rally around an eight point serving streak by Mollé which brought the Lakers up from trailing 16-10 to being up 19-16.
Gannon was able to take advantage of a 6-5 lead in which they would hold throughout the remainders of the set.
Gannnon was able to jump out to an early 7-2 start in set three which they were able to hold onto and play from the front to secure their victory.
Mercyhurst will square off against Claifornia (Pa.) on the road on October 13th, at 7:00 pm.
