Lakers' Comeback Stopped Short In D.C.

ARLINGTON, Va. – Sam Isbell's second goal of the trip and a third-period shorthanded tally from Jennifer MacAskill were not enough as the Mercyhurst women's hockey team lost its second game of the "D1 in D.C." doubleheader to St. Lawrence 3-2 at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.

Contrary to Saturday's game, it was St. Lawrence that got off to a hot start. At 15:55, Brooke Webster received a give-and-go pass from Kennedy Marchment and finished on the open cage to put the Saints ahead 1-0.

With 1:43 remaining in the first, the Saints struck again. Hannah Miller and Webster set up Marchment for a goal to put the Saints ahead by two entering the first intermission.
In the second period, the Saints first line of Marchment, Webster, and Miller continued to generate chances but Lakers goalie Jessica Convery made several key stops to keep the Lakers within two. Late in the period, the Lakers got on the board thanks to Sam Isbell's second goal in as many days. Her fifth tally of the season was assisted by Rachael Smith and it cut the Saints' lead in half 2-1 before the end of the second period.

In the third period, the Saints got the goal back in a special way. Maggie McLaughlin, a graduate of the Washington Pride responsible for hosting D1 in D.C., notched her first collegiate goal to put the Saints ahead 3-1 at 4:30.

The game's outcome looked bleak for Mercyhurst when Paige Horton headed to the penalty box at 9:38 to put the Lakers' shorthanded. While on the penalty kill, Sarah Hine got behind the Saints defense and left a pass for Jennifer MacAskill who scored the Lakers' first short-handed goal of the year to pull Mercyhurst back within one at the 10:07 mark.

Mercyhurst continued to apply pressure after the goal and had a couple of power play opportunities late in the third, including a five-on-three. The Lakers couldn't find the back of the cage and ended up taking a 3-2 defeat against the Saints.

The Lakers return to Mercyhurst Ice Center on Jan. 13 for its first home game in a full month. The Lakers host R.I.T. on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 14 at 1:00 p.m.
