ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst women's basketball team is set to host cross-town rival Gannon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
The Lakers (15-2, 10-1) have won two straight contests and have matched their highest win total since 2010-11. Mercyhurst also has the program's second-best start through 17 games (Mercyhurst was 16-1 in 1988-89).
Angela Heintz leads Mercyhurst in several categories, including points per game (16.8), rebounds (7.1), assists (6.6) and steals (1.6). She ranks second in the PSAC in assists and fifth in scoring.
Natalie Piaggesi, the PSAC's top shot-blocker with 2.1 swats per game, also averages 16.2 points and 6.6 rebounds. She rates seventh in the PSAC in scoring.
Maggie Mitchell leads Gannon's offense with an average of 16.2 points and 3.7 assists, ranking sixth and ninth, respectively, in the PSAC. Lanise Saunders averages 11.0 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks for Gannon (4-13, 4-7), which has lost two straight games.
The Erie rivals split last year's season series; visiting teams won both contests: Gannon won at the MAC, 65-62, before the Lakers won later in the year at the Hammermill Center, 62-54.
