Women's Hockey Stifled By R.I.T.

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's hockey team was shut out for the second time this season by the R.I.T. Tigers 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Despite outshooting the Tigers in the game 37-24, the Lakers couldn't stash a puck behind R.I.T. goaltender Terra Lanteigne who finished with 37 saves in the shutout.

R.I.T. got the scoring started at 15:31 in the first period on an even-strength goal from Mallory Rushton. Kendall Cornine earned an assist on the goal and the Tigers led 1-0 at the first intermission.

In the second period, Mercyhurst successfully killed a five-on-three power play, but failed to convert on a two-skater advantage of their own. Mercyhurst struggled on the power play the entire game, finished 0-6 with eight shots on net.

At 12:20 in the second, Mackenzie Stone put the Tigers ahead 2-0 on a power play goal. Cassie Clayton and Reagan Rust had helpers on the goal.

Before the end of the second period, R.I.T. notched another goal off the stick of Tori Haywood with assists from Caitlin Wallace and Kandice Sheriff at 19:22. The Tigers led 3-0 entering the final period.

The Lakers fired 13 shots on net in the last period but Lanteigne and the Tigers' defense held the fort. R.I.T. got an empty net score from Wallace to put them ahead by the eventual final score 4-0.

Mercyhurst (8-15-1, 4-6-0) looks to bounce back next weekend when it hosts Robert Morris on Friday, Jan. 20 and Saturday, Jan. 21. Puck drops will be at 7 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.
