Women's Hoops Rolls Past UPJ, Matches Highest Win Total Since '10-11

ERIE, Pa. -- Angela Heintz recorded a double-double, finishing with 19 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, as the Mercyhurst women's basketball team rolled to a 71-41 victory over Pittsburgh-Johnstown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.

Jalin Steel added 13 points -- all coming in the first half -- as the Lakers (15-2, 10-1) matched their highest win total since 2010-11. Mercyhurst also has the program's second-best start through 17 games (Mercyhurst was 16-1 in 1988-89).

The visiting Mountain Cats (6-11, 2-9) were led by Olivia McCabe, who had 16 points and nine rebounds.

Pitt-Johnstown took an early 8-2 lead, but seven different Laker scorers contributed to a 22-6 stretch, which left Mercyhurst with a 24-14 lead through one quarter. During that run, the Lakers were 8 of 12 from the field, including 3 of 3 from three-point land.

In the second period, the Cats closed their deficit to six points before a 11-2 Laker run -- six points by Steel and five by Heintz -- helped the hosts to a 41-26 halftime lead.

From there, Mercyhurst held its lead in double-figures: the gap was smallest at 13 points and largest in the game's final score (30).

As a team, Mercyhurst dominated the boards, outrebounding the Mountain Cats, 48-26.

The Lakers finished 23 of 62 from the field (37.1 percent) and 9 of 21 from three-point land (42.9) while UPJ finished 16 of 47 (34.0) and 2 of 14 (14.3), respectively. Mercyhurst was solid at the free-throw line, making 16 of 20 attempts (80.0).

Mercyhurst will return to action on Wednesday when cross-town rival Gannon visits the MAC for a 5:30 p.m. PSAC tip-off.
