Collier, Men's Hoops Escape With One-Point Win at SHU

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- Lorenzo Collier scored 15 points, including the go-ahead three-pointer, to lift the Mercyhurst men's basketball team to a 63-62 victory over Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on Wednesday.

With the Lakers trailing 62-60, Collier made a steal and then buried his game-winning trey with three seconds remaining in the contest. After a MU timeout, Seton Hill's final attempt at the basket missed its mark as the Lakers (7-7, 5-5) escaped with the win.

Durrell McDonald had nine points while Connor Polce and Malcolm Walters added eight points apiece to the Laker effort. John Majors grabbed six rebounds and Kordell Holness-Lightbody finished with four steals.

For host SHU (7-7, 4-6), Noah Davis led the way with 18 points while Fernando Salsamendi totaled 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Lakers led for much of the second half before a three by Davis pulled the Griffins even at 58-all with 2:03 remaining.

A pair of free throws by Holness-Lightbody put Mercyhurst back on top, 60-58, with 1:41 left, but Davis hit another three-ball with 58 second on the clock, putting Seton Hill ahead, 61-60.

Following a Mercyhurst miss, Salsamendi hit 1 of 2 freebies with 30 seconds left to put SHU ahead 62-60. Two more Laker misses resulted in a SHU possession, but then came the late Griffin turnover and Collier's heroics.

The Lakers went 23 of 59 from the field (39.0 percent), 5 of 16 from three-point land (31.3) and 12 of 22 from the free-throw line (54.5) while SHU was 20 of 48 (41.7), 7 of 16 (43.8) and 15 of 18 (83.3), respectively. The Lakers outrebounded the Griffins, 36-34.

Mercyhurst will return to action on Saturday with a 3 p.m. PSAC home contest against Pittsburgh-Johnstown.
