CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Mercyhurst men's soccer team lost its first game of the season 4-1 to the University of Charleston (W.Va) on Sunday. The game was the second of five straight games on the road to start the season for the Lakers.
While there was no score in the first half, the Golden Eagles controlled possession for the majority of the first 45 minutes. Charleston fired 16 total shots with five on goal.
Alex Brems stalled the Golden Eagles attack with five saves in the half.
The scoring floodgates opened in the second half beginning with Charleston. Midfielder Will Roberts scored his first of the season in the 51
st minute to put the Golden Eagles up one. Just over three minutes later, Mercyhurst was called for a penalty in the box, which allowed Roberts to bury a penalty kick to double Charleston's lead.
Charleston made the lead 3-0 in the 74
th minute after Jermaine Windster scored his first of the season with an assist awarded to Patrick Guier. In the 76
th minute, Roberts completed a hat trick on his third goal of the game to make it 4-0 Charleston.
The Lakers got on the board in the 88
th minute with
Mark Roche scored on a penalty kick, leading to the final score of 4-1.
Mercyhurst (1-1-0, 0-0-0) begins its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) schedule on Friday, Sept. 9 at West Chester.
