LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Mercyhurst field hockey team dropped its second game in as many days, falling to the Bellarmine Knights 3-1 on Sunday.
This was the second game the Lakers played at Bellarmine University this weekend. They lost 4-3 to Lindenwood on Saturday.
After the Lakers got off to a good start on Saturday by scoring three of the game's first four goals, the script flipped on them Sunday. Bellarmine got on the board first just under seven minutes into the game when Kelsey O'Bryan scored her first goal of the season.
Mercyhurst goaltender
Sam Takac went on to save the next four shots from the Knights, but Bellarmine eventually doubled its lead. Kathryn Schneidtmiller netted her first of the season, on a rebound putting the Knights up 2-0.
The Knights were awarded eight penalty corners in the first half when the Lakers didn't have any. Bellarmine ended the game with 14 compared to Mercyhurst's three, with one corner in the second half resulting in another Knights' goal.
Aimee Ilgenfritz buried her second goal of the season off a corner from Elle Lichte to put the Knights up 3-0 less than two minutes into the second half.
Mercyhurst broke the shutout in with 5:42 remaining when
Jessica Brandon scored her first of the season on an assist from Kaitlyn Lechner. The Lakers had a couple more opportunities in the waning moments, but Bellarmine held on to win 3-1.
The Lakers (0-2, 0-0) take the field next in their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game of the season when they travel to East Stroudsburg on Saturday, Sept. 10.
