Box Score ERIE, Pa. – Although the Mercyhurst men's soccer team had it's scoring chances against Ohio Valley, the Lakers weren't able to find the net and lost 1-0 at home to the Fighting Scots Wednesday afternoon.
Two of the three Lakers' losses this season have come to non-conference opponents. The other was a 4-1 defeat to Charleston (W.V) back on Sept. 4.
Play between both squads flowed freely back and forth for the first 20 minutes of play.
Thom Derks and
Connor Wilkinson both had shot opportunities that were either saved or went wide. The Fighting Scots also tested Lakers' goalkeeper
Martin Jarc in his first collegiate game early with a couple of shots on net and a few corner kick chances within the first 20 minutes.
Wilkinson sent in a corner in the 36
th minute and
Andrew Bennett missed his header opportunity high. After the Lakers' scoring chance, Ohio Valley countered and scored the game's lone goal. Jose Sierra received an elevated through-ball from Daniel Arias and volleyed it over Jarc's head into the net to put the Fighting Scots ahead for what would be the rest of the match.
Mercyhurst had its chances throughout the game to find the back of the net but couldn't cash in. Derks drew a penalty just outside the penalty area near the end of the first half, but
Mark Roche was unable to convert the free kick opportunity. In the second half, Derks had a free kick chance of his own and blasted a rocket on goal, but Ohio Valley goalkeeper Carlos Rubio stretched and got just enough of it to tip it out of harm's way.
The Lakers' final great opportunity was once again stalled by Rubio, as he stymied another header from Bennett to preserve the lead, enabling the Fighting Scots to hang on for the win.
Mercyhust (5-3-1, 4-1-0) takes the pitch next on Saturday, Oct. 1 at home in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference showdown with Pitt-Johnston beginning at 3:30 p.m.
