ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team took care of business in its 7-3 exhibition win Saturday evening against the Toronto Junior Aeros.
Brook Hartwick opened the scoring 7:12 into the first period on the power play to give Mercyhurst the early advantage.
Sarah Hine added a power play goal of her own at the 14:38 mark to double the Laker lead.
Toronto bounced back with a goals late in the first period and early in the second period to tie the game at two. Hartwick provided an answer for the Lakers with her second of the game to make it 3-2 Mercyhurst 11:23 into the second period.
Paige Horton sprung the Laker lead back to two with a goal on the power play just over a minute after Hartwick's second tally. Less than a minute after Horton's goal,
Rachael Smith got in on the scoring action to make it a 5-2 Laker advantage entering the third period.
In the final period,
Taylor Accursi and
Sam Isbell both found the net and extended to lead to 7-2 less than nine minutes into the frame. Toronto found the net at the 13:30 minute mark, but it was too little too late and the Lakers went on to win 7-3.
Mercyhurst begins its 2016-17 regular season taking on sixth-ranked North Dakota on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. Puck drop for Friday's game is scheduled at 7 p.m.
