Game Notes: Clarion at Mercyhurst

OFFICIAL GAME NOTES


THE GAME
The Mercyhurst football team will celebrate Homecoming Weekend and also play its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division opener when Clarion visits Tullio Field on Saturday, Sept. 24. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

The Lakers are coming off a 34-31 home loss to East Stroudsburg in PSAC interdivisional action on Sept. 17. Clarion lost that same day to Shippensburg, 41-17.

Saturday's matchup between Mercyhurst and Kutztown will be the ninth meeting between the two programs. The Lakers lead the all-time series, 5-3.

THE COACHES
Marty Schaetzle (Bucknell '83) is in his 15th season as head coach for Mercyhurst. He owns a 75-82 record. He is a three-time PSAC West Coach of the Year (2008, 2010, 2014) and has coached the Lakers to two PSAC West regular-season championships (2010, 2012) and one PSAC overall title (2010). Prior to coaching at Mercyhurst, Schaetzle has held assistant coach positions at Bucknell, Shippensburg, Northern Arizona, Sonoma State, Arizona and Albany.

Chris Weibel (Clarion '98) is in his second year as head coach for his alma mater. He has an 8-6 record. In his time at ESU, he was an assistant coach with the Golden Eagles for 11 years before taking the head coach job.
 
NEXT UP
The Lakers will play make their shortest road trip of the year when they travel across town to visit Gannon for a PSAC West contest. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.

Gannon is now 3-0 on the season with wins, in order, over Southern Connecticut State (31-9), Shippensburg (24-20) and Bloomsburg (30-27, OT). The Golden Knights visit 10th-ranked Slippery Rock for a 6 p.m. kickoff this week.
