Thom Derks scored twice to help the Mercyhurst men's soccer team win its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup against the East Stroudsburg Warriors 3-1 at home on Saturday. Referees called the game with 14:30 remaining in the second half due to lightning. The game is considered official since there was at least 70 minutes played.
Mercyhurst began its first home game of the season by getting the first goal in the 24
th minute.
Connor Wilkinson meandered his way into the penalty area and ripped a shot on goal.
Thom Derks redirected Wilkinson's shot past the goalkeeper for his fourth goal of the season to make it 1-0.
Derks reappeared on the score sheet later in the 34
th minute for his fifth goal of the season. After receiving a pass from
Pat Darby, Derks netted his second goal of the game to double the Lakers' lead going into halftime.
In the second half, Wilkinson had another chance on net that didn't get deflected and resulted in a goal of his own. His first of the season put Mercyhurst in front 3-0 in the 64
th minute.
East Stroudsburg finally broke through in the 75
th minute on Brandon Levano's second of the season, but the Warriors couldn't amount a comeback when weather intervened in the 77
th minute and ended the game at 3-1.
Derks is second in the PSAC in goals scored with five and third in the conference in points with 11.
Mercyhurst (3-2-1, 2-1-0) takes the field next on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Slippery Rock. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.
