#18 Baseball Eliminated By #2 Millersville At Regionals, 6-2

WEST LAWN, Pa. -- The 18th-ranked Mercyhurst baseball team suffered a 6-2 loss to No. 2 Millersville as it was eliminated from NCAA Atlantic Regional action on Monday at Ted Palka Park. With the victory, the Marauders advanced to the NCAA Division II World Series.

Daniel Elliott drove in the Lakers' only runs on a two-run single in the eighth inning, closing Mercyhurst's deficit to four, but that was as close as it got.

Elliott went 2-for-3 while Chris Gonzalez and Hank Morrison (double) had 2-for-4 games. Gonzalez and Morrison scored the Laker runs.

Mercyhurst (43-14) fell behind immediately and struggled to catch up from there.

A three-run first inning by the Marauders (50-5) put Mercyhurst in a 3-0 hole; only one of those runs was charged to Laker starting pitcher Colin McKee.

Dan Stoltzfus and David Summerfield had RBI singles in the Millersville first. Another run scored via error.

Then, in the fifth, the Marauders pushed their advantage to 6-0, scoring three runs after two outs were made. Dan Neff had a two-run triple and Tyler Orris smacked an RBI single.

McKee worked only three innings for Mercyhurst. He allowed five hits and recorded three strikeouts, two walks and one hit batsman. After Mercyhurst fell behind by six, Jamie Lauria (1 1/3), Jake Hall (2) and Chris Vallimont (1) combined for 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief, giving the Laker offense a chance at a late comeback.

Unfortunately, the two runs in the eighth was all MU mustered.

Jim McDade was the winning pitcher for Millersville, giving up two runs on eight hits. He had six strikeouts and one walk before reliever Mike Mock finished the contest with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Summerfield was 3-for-4 for Millersville while Stoltzfus, Orris, Mitch Stoltzfus and Chas McCormick had two-hit games.

Mercyhurst was represented on the Atlantic Region All-Tournament Team by its designated hitter, Elliott, and its second baseman, Brendan Cox.
