ERIE, Pa. -- The fourth-ranked Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team suffered a 10-9 overtime loss to sixth-ranked Tampa in an NCAA Tournament quarterfinal on Saturday at Tullio Field.
The Lakers (15-3) led 8-1 at halftime, but a second-half surge by the visiting Spartans culminated with eight consecutive goals to finish the game.
Connor Enright and
Myles Young had two goals apiece for Mercyhurst. Enright also made one assist.
Colin Greenway,
Oran Horn,
Derek Richards,
Greg Weyl and
Kurtis Woodland added goals for the Lakers. Assists were credited to Greenway, Horn, Woodland and
Sam Crusha.
Shane Endres led Mercyhurst in groundballs with four.
Patrick Liddy,
Keyan McQueen and
John Plaskey had three apiece. Goaltender
Matt Wells stopped four shots.
Jake Schmidt had five goals and one assist for Tampa, scoring all of his goals during the Spartans' game-ending eight-goal run.
Mercyhurst led 9-2 with 6:05 remaining in the third quarter. UT then scored four times to close the third and then three times in the fourth.
Schmidt registered back-to-back goals, tying the game with 43 seconds remaining. His game-winner occurred one minute into overtime.
Bryan Karn was the winning goalie in a relief effort for Tampa, finishing with six saves in 47:37 of time.\
The Lakers had a 36-27 shot advantage while Tampa dominated faceoffs, 17-6.
