ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University softball team splits a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) games Friday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Softball Field. Edinboro took game one, defeating the Lakers, 5-2, while Mercyhurst won game two, 8-7, in nine innings.
Game One | Mercyhurst 2, Edinboro 5
After a four-run top of the first inning for Edinboro, the Lakers found themselves behind the 8-ball early.
Shannon Minihane would cut into the Fighting Scots lead in the second inning, driving a single through the middle, scoring
Tawny Godin from second.
Minihane would get the Lakers within two, 4-2, in the bottom of the fourth, when she scored from third on a passed ball.
The Fighting Scots scored an insurance run in the top of seventh to seal the deal, while Edinboro starting pitcher Carley Nasca (W, 6-7) held Mercyhurst scoreless in the final frame.
Nasca held the Lakers to just four hits and one earned run.
Anna Cochis (L, 5-6) received the loss, pitching all seven innings, allowing 11 hits.
Game Two | Mercyhurst 8, Edinboro 7 (9 Innings)
A five-run first inning put Mercyhurst ahead, 5-2, after one.
Kayla Larson had the big hit in the inning, stroking a double to right center field, driving in Godin and
Courtney Brothers.
Edinboro would pull within one, 5-4, in the third before Brothers reached home safely in the bottom half of the inning on an error by the catcher.
Cassandra Egelston would extend the Laker lead to three, 7-4, in the fourth, when she scored on a passed ball.
With Mercyhurst holding a three-run advantage into the sixth, Kylie Mason hit a three-run homerun, tying the game at seven all.
The Lakers would eventually pull out their 13
th victory of the season in ninth, when Minihane hit a blooper over the pitcher's head, causing the shortstop to rush a force out at third base. The shortstop threw the ball past the third basemen, allowing Godin to score the winning run.
With the split, Mercyhurst now sits at 13-21 overall and 5-13 in conference play.
The Lakers will host Seton Hill tomorrow in the season finale for Senior Day. Mercyhurst will honor seven seniors prior to game one. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
