GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University softball team swept Seton Hill Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division action. The Lakers shutout the Griffins in game one, winning 1-0, while Mercyhurst held on to win 6-5 in game two. Senior
Courtney Brothers went 2-for-7 on the day, scoring one run and driving in a run, as well.
Game One | Mercyhurst 1, Seton Hill 0It was a scoreless game heading into the sixth inning, before
Cassandra Egelston doubled with one out to put a runner in scoring position. Brothers would drive her in with a single, scoring what would be the only run of the game. It was brothers' 18th RBI of the season.
Anna Cochis (4-3) pitched a complete game shutout, striking out four and only allowing four hits. She received her fourth win of the season.
Game Two | Mercyhurst 6, Seton Hill 5After
Rachel DiBartolomeo scored on a passed ball in the first inning, the Griffins took the lead in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs off a Michaela LeDonne homerun.
Mercyhurst would regain the lead after posting a five spot in the fourth inning off four Laker hits.
Brothers singled to lead off the inning and eventually scored off a
Kayla Larson single.
Meghan Maranto would follow with an RBI single, driving in
Allison Yule.
Francesca Costanzo had the big hit of the game, roping a two run double with one out to increase the Lakers' lead to 5-2. Costanzo would later score when Egelston reached safely on an error by the first basemen to end the five run fourth inning.
The Griffins would rally in the final two frames, scoring one run in the sixth and two in the seventh; but
Heather Nye (3-4) finished out the complete game and received her third win on the year. Nye struck out two batters and allowed five hits in seven innings of work.
With the sweep, Mercyhurst evens their record at 9-9 overall, while improving to 2-4 in PSAC Western Division play.
The Lakers will be back in action Wednesday, April 6 when they travel to Slippery Rock. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
