Softball Drops a Pair at Slippery Rock Wednesday Afternoon

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University softball team dropped a pair at Slippery Rock (14-13, 3-3 PSAC-W) Wednesday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division action. The Lakers (9-11, 2-6 PSAC-W) fell 5-1 in game one, while dropping an 11-2 decision in game two.

Game One | Mercyhurst 1, Slippery Rock 5

Mercyhurst would trail 5-0 heading into the seventh inning, where they would score their lone run of the game.

Taylor Jezuit would pinch hit to lead off the seventh, ripping a double to left center in her only at-bat of the game. Emily Quinn would advance Jezuit to third on a ground ball to the right side, where she was called out at first. Francesca Costanzo would follow with a deep fly out in foul territory to right field, allowing Jezuit to score from third. The RBI sacrifice fly was Costanzo's fourth RBI of the season.

Costanzo and Allison Yule both finished with two hits apiece to lead the Lakers, while Cassandra Egelston finished 1-for-2 with a double.

Anna Cochis (4-4) went the distance for the Lakers, pitching all six innings, allowing nine hits, two earned runs and struck out two. It was Cochis' fourth complete game this season.

Brooke Dawson (5-6) received the win for The Rock.

Game Two | Mercyhurst 2, Slippery Rock 11 (5 Innings)

After a scoreless first inning for the Lakers, Rachel DiBartolomeo would answer a three-run blast from Slippery Rock's Caitlyn Baxter in the bottom of the first, to cut the Mercyhurst deficit to 3-2 in the top of the third.

Ellie Dougher led off the third inning with a walk, before Egelston sacrificed her over to second with a bunt. That would lead to DiBartolomeo's fifth homerun of the season -- leads team, as she put one over the center field wall for her 22nd RBI of the season -- leads teams.

With the lead cut to one, 3-2, heading into the bottom half of the third, Slippery Rock would respond with a seven run inning.

The Lakers were never able to get back in the game, as The Rock added one more in the fourth to end the scoring at 11-2.

DiBartolomeo finished the game 2-for-2, while Dougher and Yule recorded the other two Mercyhurst hits.

Heather Nye (3-5) received the loss, while Carly DeRose (6-4) picked up the win for Slippery Rock.

Mercyhurst will be back on the road tomorrow, when they travel to Indiana (Pa.) for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for2:30 p.m. Live stats will also be available to follow along at the links provided.
