ERIE, Pa. -- The 25th-ranked Mercyhurst baseball team smacked four home runs en route to a 13-4 non-conference victory over Glenville State in the Lakers' home opener at Mercyhurst Baseball Field on Saturday.
Austin Alonge,
Cameron Balego,
Chris Gonzalez and
Steve McCaw connected for Mercyhurst dingers in the win. Balego was the Lakers' leading hitter, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Gonzalez finished with four RBI while McCaw collected two RBI.
Daniel Elliott,
Jimmy Latona and
Hank Morrison scored two runs apiece. Elliott, Latona and
Collin Fantaskey collected doubles.
On the mound, winning pitcher
Colin McKee threw six innings, giving up one run on two hits. He recorded 10 strikeouts and two walks.
Mike Schnurr worked 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out one batter, before
Jake Collins finished up the game with a scoreless inning and two strikeouts.
The Lakers (7-3) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a three-run bomb by Gonzalez and never looked back.
Glenville pushed its first run across in the fourth, but Mercyhurst increased its lead to 8-1 with a five-run fifth.
A three-run homer by Balego highlighted the Mercyhurst fifth. Elliott had a run-scoring double and Gonzalez also drove in a run during the inning.
Alonge blasted a solo home in the MU sixth, giving the Lakers a 9-1 advantage. GSU responded with its final three runs in the seventh before Mercyhurst scored twice in the seventh and twice in the eighth.
Dan Karstedt had an RBI single in the seventh for MU and
Brendan Cox added a sacrifice fly. McCaw's two-run dinger in the eighth provided the game's last runs.
Mercyhurst and Glenville State will meet again on Sunday, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
