Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst baseball team defeated Slippery Rock, 5-2 and 14-2, during Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action on Thursday.

Individual game recaps are below:

Game One: Mercyhurst 5, Slippery Rock 2
Winning pitcher Colin McKee went the distance, allowing two runs on three hits. He totaled 13 strikeouts without issuing a walk.

For the Mercyhurst offense, Brendan Cox batted 3-for-4 while Sabatino DiNardo III, Daniel Elliott and Chris Gonzalez hit home runs. Elliott finished 2-for-3. Gonzalez had two RBI.

Gonzalez got the Lakers on the board with his first-inning sacrifice fly before Elliott and DiNardo connected for solo homers in the fourth.

Mercyhurst led 3-2 when Slippery Rock's Alex Bell provided the hosts' only runs with a two-run dinger.

The Lakers pushed their lead to 5-2 in the fifth inning, scoring on a home run by Gonzalez and RBI single by Cameron Balego.

Alex Panutso was the losing pitcher for The Rock. Relief pitcher Stephen McKee worked three scoreless frames.

Game Two: Mercyhurst 14, Slippery Rock 2
Austin Alonge and Hank Morrison had four-hit games as the Lakers recorded season-high team performances for both runs and hits (16).

Morrison was a perfect 4-for-4 with a homer, two runs and four RBI. Alonge added a 4-for-5 game with a homer, double, RBI and four runs scored.

Cox, who also homered, finished 2-for-4 with three runs. Elliott and Collin Fantaskey added 2-for-4 games, Balego tripled, and Gonzalez scored twice. Fantaskey and Balego had two-RBI games.

Cam Knott earned the win on the hill. He surrendered three hits. Only one of the two runs scored on Knott was earned. Knott had 11 strikeouts and did not walk a batter. Relief pitcher Jamie Lauria tossed one scoreless inning.

Host SRU (6-19, 1-5) took a two-run lead in the first inning on RBI doubles by Bell and Tyler Walters. Mercyhurst then scored 14 unanswered runs.

In the Lakers' four-run third inning, Cox homered, Elliott had an RBI single and Balego smacked a two-run triple.

Home runs highlighted Mercyhurst's three-run fifth -- a solo bomb by Alonge and a two-run job by Morrison -- before Morrison helped push across two more runs in the sixth with a two-run single.

The Lakers (14-8, 3-3) finished out their scoring with five runs in the seventh. One run scored on a wild pitch while another came through via error. Then, Drew Borowski had a bases-loaded walk and Fantaskey hit a two-run single.

Slippery Rock's Jon Anderson was the losing pitcher.
