#28 Baseball Earns Walk-Off Win To Salvage Split With #27 Seton Hill

ERIE, Pa. -- A walk-off, two-run single by Brendan Cox ended the day as the 28th-ranked Mercyhurst baseball team salvaged a split with 27th-ranked Seton Hill in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division contest on Friday at the Mercyhurst Baseball Field.

Individual game recaps below:

Game One: Seton Hill 2, Mercyhurst 1
Starting pitcher McKee had a strong outing on the mound for Mercyhurst, giving up two runs on five hits while recording 12 strikeouts and one walk. He worked all seven innings for a complete game.

For the Mercyhurst offense, Chris Gonzalez and Hank Morrison had doubles. Gonzalez also recorded a stolen base.

SHU took the lead on a second-inning solo home run by Zach Heide. Anthony Fanelli, who went 2-for-3, added an RBI single for the Griffins in the third.

Morrison connected for an RBI double in the Lakers' third.

Game Two: Mercyhurst 4, Seton Hill 3
Cox went 2-for-3 and, ultimately, started and finished the Lakers' four-run comeback.

Austin Alonge added a triple and Gonzalez doubled in support of winning pitcher Cam Knott, who was charged with two earned runs on four hits. Knott recorded seven strikeouts, two walks and one hit batsman.

During the final two innings of their day, the Lakers had four runs on four hits; during the previous 12 frames, they had totaled one run on five hits.

For SHU, Chris Miller had an RBI double in the Griffins' two-run first inning and then Garret Vrbanic had an RBI single in the fourth, pushing the visitors advantage to 3-0.

Mercyhurst (11-6, 1-1) finished the game with a two-run sixth and two-run seventh.

Cox started the sixth with a one-out walk. He scored on Alonge's three bagger; Alonge then came home on Gonzalez's double, closing the gap to 3-2.

Then, in the seventh, Cameron Balego had a leadoff single before Sabatino DiNardo III was hit by a pitch with one out. A groundout by Drew Borowski moved Balego and DiNardo's pinch-runner, Jimmy Standohar, up one base each to set the stage for Cox's single through the middle of the infield.

Mike Bittel started on the hill for Seton Hill (13-5, 1-1), giving up three runs on four hits while tallying nine strikeouts and two walks. Relief pitcher Jesse Cooper was saddled with the loss.

The same two teams will meet again on Saturday, beginning 1 p.m. at Seton Hill.
