Men’s Basketball Set to Face Kutztown in NCAA Round of Thirty-Two

WHEELING, W. Va. – After an upset win last night over Wheeling Jesuit, 66-65, on the Cardinals home floor, Mercyhurst will face-off against PSAC Eastern Division foe Kutztown with an opportunity to advance to the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship game Tuesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the McDonough Center in Wheeling, West Virginia.

The Lakers and Golden Bears have already met once this season back in late November at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center (MAC), with Mercyhurst edging out Kutztown, 71-70, in overtime.

It was senior Sean Beins who had the big game against Kutztown earlier in the season, scoring 20 points and hitting 4-of-6 3-pointers. Damon Jones also contributed 14.

Kutztown advanced to the NCAA Second Round after defeating West Chester, 76-63, last night. The Golden Bears had four players reach double figures, as they went on to beat the Golden Rams for the third time this season.

Kutztown

- Saturday's win over West Chester, 76-63, advanced the Golden Bears to their second appearance in the NCAA Second Round. The last time Kutztown ap­peared in round two was in 2009, when they were knocked out by Gannon.

- Kutztown averages 84.6 points a game, while their defense holds opponents to 73.1.

- The Golden Bears are a good rebounding unit, averaging 41.3 boards a game.

- Saturday's win over Wheeling Jesuit, 66-65, was the Lakers first ever NCAA Tournament win in program history.

- Sunday's game against Kutztown will mark the second time these two teams faced off this season, as the Lakers prevailed over the Golden Bears, 71-70, in overtime at home back in late November.
