PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team erupted for five goals in the second period en route to a 6-3 victory against Robert Morris in College Hockey America action on Saturday.
Rachael Smith,
Emily Janiga and
Lauren Kilroy had two-point nights for the Lakers (14-10-4, 11-3-2); Smith, with a goal and an assist, and both Janiga and Kilroy, with two assists.
Samantha Fieseler,
Jennifer MacAskill,
Molly Blasen,
Brooke Hartwick and
Jenna Dingeldein also had goals for Mercyhurst.
The Lakers fell behind early on a first-period, power-play goal by RMU's Kirsten Welsh. The Colonials' lead held until the second when MU took control.
Fieseler and Blasen had goals 42 seconds apart to give the visiting Lakers a 2-1 advantage. Blasen scored on the power play, with assists from
Sarah Robello and
Lauren Kilroy.
Later in the second, the teams combined to score four goals in 2:21 with MU scoring three of those tallies. MacAskill put Mercyhurst ahead, 3-1, and received assists from Smith and Janiga, before Katherine Murphy pulled the Colonials within 3-2.
Then, Smith and Hartwick scored goals 29 seconds apart -- Smith, on the power play, with assists from Janiga and J'nail Mahadeo. Hartwick received helpers from
Hannah Bale and
Jillian Skinner.
A goal by Mackenzie Johnston helped RMU close its deficit to 5-3 before Dingeldein closed out the game's scoring with 2:35 left in the contest. Dingeldein was assisted by Kilroy and
Sarah Hine.
The Lakers outshot the Colonials, 40-28, and went 2-for-8 on the power play. Robert Morris (14-11-5, 6-6-4) was 2-for-7 on the power play.
Goalie
Jessica Convery made 25 saves to earn the win in net for MU.
Mercyhurst will return to action on Feb. 12-13 with a pair of CHA contests at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
