ERIE, Pa. -- The 44th-ranked Mercyhurst women's tennis team defeated Ashland, 9-0, in non-conference competition on Sunday at Pennbriar Athletic Club.
The Lakers, ranked third in the Atlantic Region, opened the match with three doubles wins, combining for a 24-7 score across all three matches.
Adrianna Jeffress and
Kayla Frost won the closest doubles match, defeating Ashland's Meghann Fitzpatrick and Martina Baca, 8-6, after battling back from a 4-2 deficit at No. 1 doubles.
Also in pairs,
Annie Baich and
Saioa Gomez de Segura defeated Elizabeth Kidd and Kaitlyn Snyder, 8-1, at second doubles while
Adina Spahalic and
Carmen Mantecon Duro swept Natalie Keron and Jordan Martin at third doubles, 8-0.
Singles action saw much of the same as all scores combined saw the Lakers with a 72-11 edge.
In singles action, 18th-ranked Gomez de Segura, who is also No. 1 in the Atlantic, defeated Baca, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 1 singles match.
The team match wrapped up with an exciting contest at No. 2 singles as MU's Jeffress bested Fitzpatrick, 6-2, 6-3.
Also in singles, Mantecon Duro defeated Keron, 6-0, 6-0, at third singles; Baich handled Snider at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-0; Frost won at fourth singles over Kidd, 6-2, 6-1; and Spahalic won the sixth ainglst match against Chelsea Myers, 6-0, 6-0.
Mercyhurst (3-2) will return to competition on Tuesday, Feb. 8, with a non-conference contest at Pennbriar against Roberts Wesleyan.
