Men's Ice Hockey Defeats Army, Claims Bye to AHA Quarterfinals

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Jonathan Charbonneau scored two goals, lifting the Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Army West Point in Atlantic Hockey action, as the Lakers secured a bye to the AHA Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday.

Patrick Piacentini also scored for the Lakers (15-13-4, 13-9-4), who can fall no lower than fifth in the AHA standings after the win. Goaltender Brandon Wildung made 36 saves.

Piacentini gave Mercyhurst a 1-0 first-period lead, getting assists from Kane Elliot and Wes Baker, before Army's C.J. Reuschlein responded later in the period.

Charbonneau had a power-play goal with 54 seconds remaining in the second -- with assists from Lester Lancaster and Taylor Best -- and then put the game away with an empty-netter with 1:12 to go. Tyler Enns and Derek Barach assisted the final goal.

The Lakers went 1-for-4 on the power play while West Point finished 1-for-7. Mercyhurst held a 38-37 shot advantage.

Black Knight goaltender Parker Gahagen totaled 35 saves.

Mercyhurst will finish its AHA regular-season schedule on Feb. 26-27 with a pair of games against the Rochester Institute of Technology -- in Rochester on Friday and in Erie on Saturday.
