ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University men's basketball team got back to their winning ways Wednesday night at the MAC. The Lakers went on to defeat Seton Hill, 74-61, in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action, as they move a half-game ahead of Edinboro for the two spot in the Western Division. The win improves the Lakers' record to 16-8 overall and 13-7 in league play, while the Griffins fall to 11-13, 9-11 PSAC.
Despite allowing Seton Hill to shoot 52.2% (24-of-46) from the field, Mercyhurst was able to hold the Griffins to only 61 points. The Lakers shot just as well, finishing 28-of-55 (50.9%) from the floor and went 12-of-13 from the free throw line. Mercyhurst also made six 3-pointers, all in the first half.
The Lakers jumped out to an early nine point, before the Griffins pulled within one, 20-19, with 9:42 to play in the first half. From there, Mercyhurst went on to outscore Seton Hill 23-10 the rest of half, taking a 14 point lead into the break.
Mercyhurst would lead by double digits for the majority of the second half. The Lakers outscored the Griffins 18-8 in the paint in the second half and led by as many as 17.
Kayode Ajenifuja scored a career-high 25 points on 10-of-11 shooting, while
Damon Jones posted 16 and
Gerrae Williams 14.
Mercyhurst has already clinched their seventh straight PSAC Tournament appearance; but with two games left, they will have to await their seeding. As of now, the Lakers will have a bye in the first round for the second consecutive season.
The Lakers will conclude their home schedule Saturday, February 20, against California (Pa.). Mercyhurst will honor six seniors prior to the game. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
