ERIE, Pa. -- Redshirt-senior running back
Richie Sanders recorded four total touchdowns as the Mercyhurst football team celebrated "Senior Day" with a 49-14 victory over Lock Haven in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference interdivisional matchup on Saturday at Tullio Field.
Sanders had 19 carries for 83 yards and three TDs on the ground. Through the air, he made two catches for 30 yards and a score and finished with 162 all-purpose yards.
Fellow senior running back
Drew Robinson had nine carries for 59 yards and a touchdown.
Quarterback
Doug Altavilla had a solid outing, completing 18 of 22 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end
Bryce Mostoller had five grabs for 72 yards. Wide receiver
Clay Waldron added a touchdown reception.
Seniors shone bright on the defensive side of the ball as defensive back
Tarique Ellis totaled nine tackles and a 27-yard interception-return touchdown while linebacker
Jakob Plonski, defensive back
Dorian Stevens and defensive linemen
Benji Abercrombie and
Conall Ryan tacked on one tackle-for-loss each.
The Lakers jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Altavilla found Sanders for a five-yard touchdown hookup.
The Mercyhurst advantage extended to 14-0 when Robinson broke off a 34-yard touchdown run.
The visiting Bald Eagles (4-7) trimmed the deficit to 14-7 when quarterback Caleb Walton found wide receiver Kyeef Williams, who dashed 58 yards for a score.
From there, the Lakers scored the next 35 points. Sanders had TD runs of 1, 22 and 3 yards. Ellis added his touchdown and Waldron caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Altavilla.
Lock Haven finished the scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run by running back John Ford.
Ford finished with 28 carries for 124 yards. Williams had four catches for 92 yards and Walton finished 19 of 39 for 223 yards.
For the LHU defense, linebacker Carmelo Cruz and defensive back Rahjeir Miles-Eubanks had eight total tackles apiece.
