Ithaca, N.Y. – The Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team couldn't overcome an early deficit to Cornell and lost 2-1 at Lynah Rink Saturday afternoon. The loss was the Lakers' third straight on the young season.
Cornell came right out at the start and scored the first goal of the game 1:15 in. After a
Morgan Stacey slashing call at 1:03, the Big Red went on the power play and Kristin O'Neill scored one past Mercyhurst goalie
Jessica Convery to go up 1-0. Assists were awarded to Jamie Bourbonnais and Hanna Bunton on the power play goal. Mercyhurst couldn't find the tying goal in the first period and went to the first intermission down one.
In the second period, Mercyhurst led Cornell in shots 8-4, but Cornell goalie Marlen Bissonault and the rest of the Cornell defense stood up to the task. The game remained 1-0 Cornell after two periods.
The Lakers looked to tie things up in the third period but Cornell beat them to the scoring category again to add an insurance goal. O'Neill netted her second goal of the game at even-strength to pull Cornell ahead 2-0 with 11:32 remaining. The insurance goal proved to be important for Cornell because Mercyhurst finally got on the board at the 16:41 mark in the period.
Taylor Accursi scored her second of the season with assists to
Jillian Skinner and
Molly Blasen to pull the Lakers within one with just over three minutes left to play.
Mercyhurst pulled Convery with 1:44 remaining in an attempt to tie the game with the extra attacker. The Lakers got one shot opportunity in that time and it was stopped by Bissonault, resulting in a 2-1 loss for Mercyhurst.
The Lakers (1-4-1) look to bounce back in their next game at Robert Morris on Friday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m.
