Lakers Draw With Gannon

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's soccer team tied rival Gannon 1-1 after two overtime periods on Wednesday night at Gannon's McConnell Family Stadium. The Lakers earned one point for the tie, and are now tied with Bloomsburg with 20 points in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference standings.

Gannon started the match with the game's best chance in the ninth minute. Taylor Lewis put a shot that beat Laker goalkeeper Kristen Koch, but the goal post kept the ball out and the game remained scoreless.
After entering as a substitute in the 24th minute, Maya Fanazini made her mark on the game by scoring a goal for the Lakers. Fanazini scored her third goal of her freshman season in the 32nd minute and gave Mercyhurst the 1-0 advantage in the first half.

In the second half, Mercyhurst held their own in preserving the one goal lead. As the last line of defense, Koch did her best to keep Gannon off the score sheet. She faced 24 shots in the game and made a season-high 13 saves, but one goal did get past that enabled the Golden Knights to tie the game.

In the 73rd minute, Gannon was awarded a free kick. Kelsey O'Connor sent a pass in that was corralled by Olivia Sharbaugh who scored her first career goal and knotted the game at one apiece. After the Golden Knights goal, both teams began to dig-in defensively to limit the oppositions' chances. As a result, the game went to overtime tied 1-1.

In the first extra period, neither team had legitimate scoring opportunities. In the second overtime period, Mercyhurst had two chances that were squandered by Gannon's defense. Time ran out in the second overtime with no goals scored, ending the game in a 1-1 draw.

Mercyhurst (7-6-2, 6-6-2) is currently tied for ninth place in the PSAC, which places them one spot out of the postseason. The Lakers have three more games to try and make up ground to get into the conference playoffs. Their next game is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 22 at home against Kutztown. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
