Box Score ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's soccer team snapped a season-long 3 game losing-streak with a 2-0 win at home against the Mansfield Mountaineers Sunday afternoon.
Mercyhurst opened up scoring in the 17
th minute. After the Lakers' were given a corner kick,
Rebekah Craig sent the ball into the box where
Jinan Abdalah Funes was waiting. She headed the ball into the goal for her team-leading sixth goal of the season and put the Lakers up 1-0.
Just a minute later, the Lakers pounced on another opportunity to double their lead.
Maya Bauer got possession of the ball near midfield and made her way all way down the to the 18-yard box. She passed to
Maia Russo who was sprinting down the right side of the field. Russo took her shot to the lower-left corner and scored to make it 2-0. It was Russo's second goal of the season.
In the second half, the Lakers went into lockdown mode and made sure the Mountaineers couldn't amount any kind of comeback. They continued to dominate possession on the offensive side of the pitch and gave up only one shot in the half. The Lakers' back-line made life easy for goalkeeper
Kristen Koch, who earned her sixth shutout of the season in the Lakers 2-0 win.
The Lakers (7-6-1, 6-6-1) play cross-town rival Gannon next on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. at Gannon.
