EDINBORO, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University women's basketball team dropped a 68-54 decision at Edinboro Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play. The loss drops the Lakers' record to 10-12 overall and 8-8 PSAC, while the Fighting Scots improve to 15-7, 10-6 PSAC.
Mercyhurst held an early lead in the first quarter -- 7-5 with 7:24 on the clock-- but would then trail for the entirety of the game. The Lakers trailed by eight, 30-22, heading into the break.
The Lakers would remain in the game with a strong third period, outscoring the Fighting Scots 20-14. Mercyhurst would enter the fourth only down two, 44-42, and opened the period with
Alex Artise jumper, to tie the game at 44. However, Edinboro would go on to outscore Mercyhurst 24-10 down the stretch and sweep the season series with the Lakers for the third straight season.
Mercyhurst finished shooting 20-of-58 (34.5%) from the field, while Edinboro held a slight rebound advantage, 40-38.
Angela Heintz and
Natalie Piaggesi led the Lakers in scoring with 12 points apiece, while
Jalin Steel added 10.
The Lakers will be back at home Wednesday, February 3, to host the PSAC Western Division leading IUP Crimson Hawks. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. from the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
