MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University men's basketball team handled Mansfield, 92-58, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover matchup at Decker Gymnasium Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Lakers' record to 9-4 overall and 6-3 in conference play. The Mountaineers fall to 3-10, 1-8 PSAC-E.
Mercyhurst jumped out to an early 10 point lead, 11-1, just 4:03 into the game.
H'ian Hale contributed five of the Lakers' 11 early points. The early 10 point advantage would be the largest lead Mercyhurst would obtain in the first half, as they took an eight point lead into the break, 42-34.
Mansfield closed the Laker lead to within four, 46-42, with 16:06 to play before Mercyhurst went on a 36-3 run. The Lakers would hold the Mountaineers scoreless for 8:14 over the stretch run. Mercyhurst would lead by as many as 38 points and would run away with their third consecutive victory.
The Lakers finished 30 of 54 (55.6%) from the field and 10 of 21 from three (47.6%).
Damon Jones was the Lakers leading scorer with 19 points while
Kevin Marsh (16),
Kayode Ajenifuja (15), Hale (10) and
Malcolm Walters (10) also recorded double figures scoring.
Mercyhurst will travel back home to host Lock Haven Wednesday, January 6, at the MAC. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
