ERIE, Pa. – It was a tough shooting night for Mercyhurst, as they saw their eight game winning streak come to an end Wednesday night to the hands of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) foe Slippery Rock, 64-54. The loss drops the Lakers' record to 14-5 overall and 11-4 in PSAC play. Slippery Rock improves to 11-10, 6-9 PSAC.
It was a rough start for both Mercyhurst and Slippery Rock as each team finished the first half shooting in the 20th percentile – SRU 29.2% and MER 22.2%. The Lakers would only hold the lead once in the opening half, when
Damon Jones hit a 3-pointer to make it a 3-1 game just 30 seconds in.
The Rock would lead by as many as nine, before Mercyhurst went on an 8-0 run to close out the half. The Lakers would hold Slippery scoreless the final 3:09 and only trailed by one heading into the second half.
The Lakers would muster a one point lead in the second half, 19-18, but it didn't last long. Slippery Rock seemed to answer every bucket the Lakers would make in the second half. It would be the only time Mercyhurst led the rest of the way, as Slippery Rock opened up a nine point advantage with nine minutes to play.
The shooting woes were too much to overcome for Mercyhurst, as they finished the contest shooting 27.8 (15-of-54) percent from the field – their lowest output this season.
Damon Jones led the team in scoring with 15 points while
Kayode Ajenifuja recorded 10.
Mercyhurst will try and regroup for another tough PSAC West road game at Edinboro Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
