GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University men's basketball team cruised to their sixth straight victory after defeating Seton Hill Wednesday night, 67-48, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action. The Lakers improve to 12-4 overall and 9-3 in PSAC play while the Griffins fall to 6-9, 4-6 PSAC.
After Seton Hill took an early eight point lead, 10-2, through the first 4:38, the Lakers went on a 15-2 run, to take a three point lead, 15-12, midway through the first. Mercyhurst would build an 11 point lead over the next ten minutes of the opening frame, taking a 37-26 advantage into break. The Lakers shot 46.2% (12 of 26) from the field in the first half while
Jean Onana (11) and
Kayode Ajenifuja (10) combined to score 21 of the 37 first half points.
Mercyhurst would open a 20 point lead with 8:32 to play after two Ajenifuja free-throws. The Lakers opened the second half outscoring the Griffins 18-9 over the first 11:28. The lead would increase to as many as 24, before Seton Hill rattled off the final five points to close the scoring at 67-48.
Ajenifuja finished the game leading all scorers with 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Onana also posted double digits, scoring 14 points on 4 of 7 shooting from the field.
The Lakers shot 25 of 57 (43.9%) for the game and edged the Griffins on the boards, 36-34. Mercyhurst forced Seton Hill into 17 turnovers, converting the miscues into 20 points.
Mercyhurst will travel back home to host cross town rival Gannon next Wednesday, January 20. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. from the Mercyhurst Athletic Center (MAC).
