ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's hockey team got goals from nine different players and defeated the visiting Ottawa Lady Senators U-19 team, 13-1, on Saturday afternoon in their second exhibition contest of the weekend at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Lakers rebounded from a 4-1 exhibition loss to the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL)'s Buffalo Beauts on Friday night.
Junior forward
Taylor Accursi led the way with four goals while senior forward
Emily Janiga added a pair. Other goal-scorers were seniors
Hannah Bale,
Jenna Dingeldein, and
Kathy Donohue; sophomores
Jennifer MacAskill and
Sarah Robello; and freshmen
Samantha Fieseler and
Rachael Smith.
Ottawa scored the first goal of the game in the first period, but Accursi retaliated with back-to-back scores later in the period and the rout was on.
Robello had the only power play goal as the Lakers finished 1-for-3 with the extra attacker. The Lady Senators did not have a power play opportunity.
Lakers' head coach,
Michael Sisti, divided the 60 minutes equally among his three goaltenders. Freshman
Kerri St. Denis played the first period while freshman
Sarah McDonnell and sophomore
Jessica Convery worked the second and third periods respectively.
Mercyhurst outshot Ottawa 50-18.
The Lakers will open the regular season next Friday and Saturday, October 2 and 3, at seventh-ranked Quinnipiac University. Game times are set for 7:00 p.m. on Friday and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday in Hamden, Connecticut.
