Volleyball Splits Pair Of Matches For Second Straight Day

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University volleyball team went five games twice on Saturday during the second and final day of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West-East Crossover. And, as it did on Friday, the Lakers earned a split. Mercyhurst moved to 7-8 overall and 2-2 in conference action.

In the opener, the Lakers took defending PSAC Champion, Pitt-Johnstown (9-2; 3-0), to the limit before bowing 3-2. The scores were 24-26, 25-23, 25-21, 14-25, and 8-15.

Juniors Lauren Kenny and Haley Adams led the Lakers with nine kills apiece. Adams also had four of Mercyhurst's seven total blocks. Junior Samantha Giardina led four players in double-digit digs with 22 while senior Kelly Vitt had a match-high 34 assists.

Lock Haven (8-6, 1-3) was the opponent in the finale and, this time, the fifth game went the Lakers way.

The scores were 25-20, 12-25, 25-18, 26-28, and 17-15. Mercyhurst led 14-13 and 15-14 in the deciding game, but had trouble slamming the door until the Bald Eagles put together back-to-back errors to give the Lakers the five-game win.

Junior Sarah Wegrzyn led four players in double-digit kills with 19. She also had a match-high five solo blocks and totaled a match-high 24 points. Vitt (45) and junior Hannah Tombaugh (18) combined for 63 of the Lakers' 68 assists. Giardina had a game-high 37 digs.

The Bald Eagles had more service aces (6-1), but Mercyhurst countered with more blocks (12-5).

The Lakers finished 2-2 in the crossover, losing to Shippensburg 3-0 before rallying from two-down to defeat Millersville on Friday night.

Mercyhurst, now 7-8 overall and 2-2 in the conference, will return to action this Friday night, October 2, when it entertains PSAC-West rival California University of Pennsylvania at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. Start time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
