Women’s Soccer Blanks East Stroudsburg, 2-0, Sunday Afternoon

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's soccer team shut out East Stroudsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action, 2-0. Junior Carly Zimmerman and senior Allie Cornacchia each recorded their first goal of the season Sunday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, Cornacchia, a Toronto, Ontario native, would break the tie in the 66th minute when she placed a free kick from 19 yards out into the back of the net. Her first goal of the year gave the Lakers a 1-0 advantage.

Just three minutes later, Zimmerman, a Churchville, N.Y. native, would add another score as she was assisted by Nicole McAlpin. The goal put Mercyhurst ahead 2-0 with 21 minutes to play.

Senior goalkeeper Ellie McDougall, a Granby, Connecticut native, got her first start of the season in net and recorded a shutout, making two saves. The Warriors outshot the Lakers, 13-2, with each team putting two shots in net.

With the win, Mercyhurst improves their record to 2-2-2, 2-2-2 PSAC, while East Stroudsburg falls to 4-2, 4-2 PSAC.

Mercyhurst will have back-to-back home games starting Wednesday, September 23, when they play host to Slippery Rock. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
